What is CBD?
Did you know that there are over 80 cannabinoids that can be extracted from the hemp plant? CBD, short for Cannabidiol, along with delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol are the two most common compounds of this diverse plant. While often given a bad reputation due to THC’s “high-like” effects, it’s important to note that CBD is very different from THC.
Both THC and CBD affect the receptors in your brain and body differently. That intoxicating feeling that THC is known for is not prevalent in CBD, as it is non-psychoactive. CBD, on-the-other-hand, is easy to consume and offers therapeutic benefits making it a more appealing choice for those just getting familiar with CBD.
The wellness industry was one of the first to jump on the CBD bandwagon, as it can be used topically as well as internally (through ingestion) for a variety of reasons ranging from skin problems to sleep disorders. Sold in a variety of forms such as flavored gummies and moisturizing lotions, beauty and wellness lovers find CBD very appealing.
Thanks to the health and science communities, CBD is starting to be seen as a safe and natural alternative, rather than being tied to marijuana’s negative stigma. As the demand for CBD continues to grow, more and more research is being conducted on the benefits of using CBD to heal and rejuvenate.
Is CBD Legal?
The legality of CBD is a touchy and controversial subject. Luckily, the recent passing of the 2014 Farm Bill has helped to clearly define what the guidelines are surrounding CBD. The passing of this bill allowed state governments the legal right to grow and research hemp. In addition, any CBD products with less than .3% THC officially became classified separately from marijuana.
In 2018, the Farm Bill was updated and included the legalization of growing, producing, consuming, and selling CBD products in all 50 states. This guaranteed that all products being sold contained less than .3% THC, per Congress’ decision. However, this bill does not include any CBD products that are derived from marijuana, as those legalities vary depending on the state.
The legalization of CBD also included the ability to travel with Cannabidiol that contains less than .3% THC. According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), “Marijuana and certain cannabis-infused products remain illegal under federal law except for products that contain no more than 0.3% THC on a dry weight basis or that are approved by the FDA.”
What are the Benefits of CBD?
CBD is a staple for beauty and wellness enthusiasts. Bloggers and everyday consumers praise CBD for its ability to provide relief to complexion issues and other beauty problems that would normally require over-the-counter (OTC) medications. OTC medication often has harsh side effects, however, CBD is a much more natural alternative that allows you to skip out on experiencing those unwanted effects.
Research continues to grow around what CBD can and cannot help. However, there are a few definitive examples of what CBD does work to provide relief to:
- Dry Skin
- Eczema
- Inflammation
- Acne
- Swelling
- Aches
If you have ever suffered from acne, then you would know that treating it can be frustrating as there are many factors that cause acne to appear. Studies have shown that CBD can help prevent breakouts that lead to acne by regulating the skin’s oil production. Unlike harsh OTC acne drugs, CBD offers a more natural treatment that does cause drying, redness, or peeling as some popular medications do.
According to New York City dermatologist, Dendy Engelman, inflammation causes a variety of skin issues including acne and aging. CBD has anti-inflammatory properties making it a saving grace for people wanting to fight acne and reduce signs of aging. “Inflammation is the root of all evil,” Engelman states, and trying out CBD for your skincare needs might just be the perfect solution.
