Tips on How Not to be a Slave to Fashion

Tips on How Not to be a Slave to Fashion

It is not necessary, in order to be fashionable, to follow every trend and fad currently on the market. A slave to fashion is someone who falls for every trend in spite of the way it may look.

You may wish to shine when playing the best Uptown Pokies or stand out at the best parties but not every trend is suitable for everyone.  What works for one person may be totally unsuitable for you. It’s important to choose trends that work for you and disregard the ones that don’t.

Choosing those trends that suit you and look good on your body type will prevent you from becoming a fashion victim.

Be sensible – don’t just randomly follow trends

Not all looks will look good on you.   Whilst most celebrities can usually get away with most any look, it doesn’t mean the same will go for you.   In the 2000s the low-cut jeans were the new fad and became very popular.  Many celebrities were wearing them.

However, for most people they were anything but flattering.  It doesn’t pay to just follow new trends blindly.  Don’t rush out immediately and purchase the latest trend. It could be that you would only wear it once or maybe twice at the most.

Limit your spending

Set aside a specific amount to spend on fashion items.  Be strict about keeping to it.   Only the amount you have earmarked can be spent on new trends.  This will help you not to become a victim to fashion trends and save you money in the process.

Be inspired by fashion trends and not victimized by them.

You don’t really want to be a copy cut out of someone else.  Show some individuality by adding your own special touches.  Better to let the latest trend inspire you, and to somehow include it or aspects of it, into your own personal look.

If snakeskin print is the latest fad, it doesn’t mean you have to wear nothing but that. You can use the trend as an inspiration and include a small item, like a snakeskin print scarf, with your own personal style.

Choose trends that feel comfortable

Only choose trends that make you feel good about yourself and that you feel comfortable wearing. Feeling comfortable and secure in what you are wearing will give you confidence.   Being aware of how you feel, will let you know if it is a good fit.

It is even possible that some trends are quite harmful. Painfully high heels can cause irreparable damage to your feet over the long term, and super tight skinny jeans have been known to actually cut off circulation.  Think about what you are doing.  This will help to prevent you from becoming a slave to fashion.

Acquire some classic items

It is always worthwhile to invest in some trends that never go out of fashion.  A great little black dress for those important events and a good pair of jeans with a simple white or black top.  You can never go wrong with either of these.  They will always prove useful and never go out of style.

It is always good to have a classic jacket, black, navy or grey. This will compliment a pair of jeans and make the outfit a little more dressy and sophisticated.

Purchase a simple black or neutral colored pump. These are very versatile and can be worn with both trousers and skirts.  Adding a handbag, scarf or some simple jewelery will help to make your outfit timeless but can still be on trend.   Remember, however, to always keep to your budget for purchasing trends.

Cleaning out your wardrobe

The fashion industry is forever changing.  That is the nature of the business.   Introducing new trends means increasing sales.  It could well be that you have items that are completely out of date. It is a good idea to look through your closet and pass on things that you’ll likely never wear again.

Try not to hold onto items for too long.  If you haven’t worn it for about a year it is time to let it go.  When you purchase a new trend, maybe think of getting rid of an old one.  This way you’ll have some room in your wardrobe.

We tend to hold onto things that we particularly like even if they don’t fit us anymore. Get rid of them.  Anything that is stained or damaged in some way should also go.  Don’t be a slave to fashion.

Only accept second hand clothes, or hand-me-downs, if you know for sure that they are stylish and that you will wear them. If not, they will just fill up the space in your closet.

Look for trends that compliment your body shape – choose clothes that fit

Buying something just because it is a new trend but that actually doesn’t fit you properly is a sign that you have become a victim to fashion.  If you don’t feel comfortable, chances are it doesn’t fit.

Shirts made to tuck in should be long enough that they don’t ride up with movement.  Unless a shirt has a dropped sleeve, the shoulder seam should sit nicely on the edge of your shoulder and long sleeves should reach your wrist.

Shirts with buttons down the front should fit well and definitely not buckle down the front showing what’s underneath.

Pants should feel comfortable around the waist allowing you to breath and jeans can be skinny but without being too constricting.

A bargain is not always a bargain

Sometimes it is hard to resist buying something because we think it is a bargain. But do you really love it?  Does it make sense to buy it?  Will it be useful and will it match the things in your wardrobe.  You should have a basic wardrobe that reflects the colors you like and that suit you.  Anything you buy should fit into the pieces that you have there.

Things that work for your body type

We all have different body types – pear, inverted triangle, apple, banana (yes, these are real body types) – and it’s best to dress accordingly.

Ideally you want to balance out the thicker parts of your body by drawing attention to the thinner parts.  If you are wider around the middle area, choose clothes that don’t emphasize your waist.  Consider wearing shift dresses and shirts with an empire waist.

If you are thin on top and larger on the bottom you can emphasize this by wearing nicely fitted shirts and jackets. Instead of a skinny jean, a straight leg pant might work better.

If you are more of an hourglass shape you should emphasize that tiny waist. High waisted pants and wrap around dresses will work well for you.

If you have more of a boyish figure, with few curves, you can enhance your bust and hips by drawing attention to your waist with the help of a belt. Wearing flared skirts and pants with a boot cut will also help.

Take your lifestyle into account

When choosing trends, make sure that they align with your lifestyle choice.  If you are a professional, or a sporty type then you should choose items that are appropriate for that lifestyle.

Extra Tips

  • Trends you feel most comfortable in are the ones to follow.
  • Include lots of neutral colors in your wardrobe and a few prints to ensure balance.
  • An outfit should have no more than three colors.
  • Don’t overdo it.   Avoid too much of anything – too much jewelery, make-up or colors.  Keep it classic and add one or two trends to keep it stylish.
  • It is always worth trying it on before you buy it.
  • Take a stylish trustworthy friend with you when you go shopping.
  • Wear the right underwear for your outfit and make sure they fit you well.
  • Try not to do a lot of shopping in one go.
  • If you have a particular item you find difficult to let go of, you could store it somewhere.  Trends do sometimes come back in style again.
