Any dog can look smart by simply putting him in smart-looking dog outfits. However, the truth is that all dogs are smart in many different ways and can come in various forms.
One marker for intelligence though is trainability and this is measured through obedience tests. One such study was done by neuropsychologist Stanley Coren, PhD. In his book, The Intelligence of Dogs, the following breeds were named the top five.
Contents
Border Collie
Border Collies are true working dogs who are known for their extraordinary instinct and high energy. They are able to learn new tricks and commands quickly. They are great sheep herders.
Poodle
Poodles are very active and highly intelligent. They love the outdoors and can be easily trained to retrieve, obey, track, and hunt. Another great thing about them is that they’re hypoallergenic.
German Shepherd
German Shepherds are usually trained as police, guard, and service dogs, which is not surprising because they’re confident, brave, and smart. They’re also great as herders and as family dogs.
Golden Retriever
Golden Retrievers are a popular choice for pets because they are friendly and loving. However, they actually serve as remarkable search-and-rescue dogs too and have a great ability to retain information.
Doberman Pinscher
These muscular dogs are known for being amazing police or war dogs not only because of their strength, speed, and endurance but also of their fearlessness. They can also absorb and retain commands quickly.
These dogs were named the smartest because they were able to learn commands in less than five seconds and follow it 95% of the time or better. However, this doesn’t mean other dogs are not as smart as they are.
Help your dog be his best by understanding his innate abilities and train him to bring out his natural intelligence.
